mud box Placer Mining
See quote.
- 1942  Every miner has a mud box in his cabin. This is a watertight wooden box about six feet square and about two feet high, which is filled with warm water with which to pan out the pay dirt. The mud box has a twofold purpose. It not only enables a miner to pan out pay dirt in order to see how the gold is running, but it also enables him to get sufficient gold to purchase provisions and supplies on a trip to Dawson, without having to wait for the regular spring clean-up.
